Artist's Comments

This was done in Illustrator (CS3) for a class awhile back. We were supposed to design labels for bottles, so I did one of my original characters, Kiji, on a bottle of medicine, because he's a Healer. The style was taken from Art Nouveau labels, like those of Alphonse Mucha.

For those who want to know what the symbolism in the label is about, I'll explain. The medicine (called 'Hedeska';) is made from, among other things, the flower 'hualotu', which is also the 'national flower' for their people. That's what he's holding in his left hand. The hualoti also appear near the top of the frame, and their leaves and stems create its structure.

Kiji's right hand is holding the necklace that all healers wear, especially when they're out in the field. It stores information, locations and comrades' stats, etc.

At the bottom, right and left, are small medicine bottles, their naturalistic decorative motifs typical of Kiji's native culture. They also indicate the balance between natural and synthetic remedies in the culture's healing.
